Curcuma (Haridra / Turmeric / Curcuma longa) is a plant up to 1 meter high with light green leaves that remind of reeds. Its magnificent yellow, purple and crimson flowers have the shape of a dense, cone-like spike. Curcuma belongs to the ginger family and reproduces through underground root runners, so-called rhizomes, which are used in Ayurveda.
The intense yellow rhizomes of the turmeric plant have also given it the name turmeric. In India, turmeric was already one of the most important spices and dyes 4000 years ago. It was considered sacred and even today newborns are painted with a yellow dot of turmeric on their forehead to give them luck.
